Different Types of Tops to Flatter your Body Type

When any woman walks in the store she will find that there are a number of different tops to select from and add to her growing wardrobe and style. Women do not ever want to be a “plain Jane,” so they tend to look toward designers like Theyskens' Theory, Rag & Bone, Tory Burch, Marc by Marc Jacobs, Haute Hippie, Young Fabulous & Broke, and Tibi to provide them with trendy, fashionable tops to add to their wardrobe for all occasions. Even if a woman only has two or three pairs of jeans, they are likely to have numerous tops that they can mix and match depending on their personal style, mood, and what they will be doing.

Women choose the exact right style of tops to accentuate all their good parts while, at the same time, drawing all attention away from areas of their body they deem to be not as flattering and imperfect. Different types of women’s tops will look a lot better on some women and not others. It depends on the features of the woman’s body. Women should always take some time at the store to try on different style tops to determine which are the most flattering and which are not. They should never just buy a top without trying it one. They may take it home, try it on and find that it does not flatter them at all. Common shirt styles include camisoles, t-shirts, sweaters, empires, tunics and blouses. What separates then style-wise is the length of the sleeves, the type of collar, and then the cut of the top.

What parts of a top should you look at?

Sleeve length is very important to look at. Most sleeves are either long that hit the wrist, three-quarters length sleeves that stop between the wrist and the elbow, short sleeves that stop along the bicep or they are capped in which they do not fall below the armpit. Sleeveless tops, as the name clearly states, do not have any sleeves but rather a strap that goes over the shoulder.

Tops can either have collars or they do not have them at all. Collars either lay flat or they can stand up. Straight collars are equated with business and formal attire whereas rounded collars denote playfulness. If a top does not have a collar, it is collarless and therefore described by the type of neckline it has. There are many different types, but popular ones include crew necks, scoop necks, and v-necks.

The cut of a top refers to the shape of the top. Some tops are loose fitting and boxy and tend to have straight seams that run from the hem right to the armpit. Empire tops are more of a trapeze shape where they are a bit tight on front and then flare out toward the bottom and become looser fitting. Other cuts include wraps, polos, tunics and henleys.

The main types of tops

There are three main types of tops that women will have – casual tops for everyday wear, dressy tops for more formal occasions, and party tops for going out.

Casual tops include camisoles, t-shirts, and tank tops. They are considered the building blocks of any wardrobe and all women have a number of them in their closets and drawers. They work with all trends and styles and offer wearers complete flexibility. They can be used to create a number of outfits when matched with different pants and accessories. They are also really good when it comes to layering under long sleeve tops, cardigan sweaters, vests, and other fun fashion tops. When it comes to purchasing casual tops, always look at the different fabrics available. Because they are often worn close to the skin, women should ensure the fabric is comfortable and light to provide freedom of movement. They are great when pairing with see-through tops and sweaters. Because there are a number of different available necklines, women should pick the one that best flatters their body. When it comes to casual tops, women should always secure the basics, namely black and white. Women should ensure their wardrobe has a tank top, t-shirt, and long sleeve shirt in both black and white as they can be paired with just about anything. The best part about casual shirts is that with the right accessories, they can be turned into chic party tops.

Dressy tops are great for women who are looking to feel pretty and feminine while they are out. They come in a multitude of styles and designs, including silk blouses, shirts with ruffles, printed fabrics and fun details like pleats, rouching, lace, bows, buttons, and more. They can be paired with both skirts and pants and tend to be versatile enough for parties, work, dates, and family functions. The primary difference between a dressy top and a party top is that dressy tops look much more modest and do not necessitate showing off a lot of skin. Always purchase dressy tops in a number of plain colors, such as white, black, brown, and red. These colors keep women covered throughout all the seasons and women can mix and match them with different pieces of jewelry.

The last type of top is the party tops. They are more fun and a bit more daring than dressy tops. They are very trendy and are perfect for women going out to a night on the town and want to feel comfortable while walking down the street. Party tops come in a wide variety of designs, from open-back shirts to bustier tops, off the shoulder tops and even hip and sexy club wear. Party tops are also known for sequins and glitter. When selecting party tops, women should look for a number of versatile designs and colors in order to ensure the functionality of the tops. Tube tops, kimono tops, bustier tops, and very low V-neck party tops never go out of style. Secure party tops in black and white as they go with everything. One of the most popular party tops currently available are tunic tops. These tops tend to go past the thighs and can be paired with a funky belt and either leggings or tights to turn it in to a dress. Women should always select party tops that show off their best assets. By enhancing their best features, they can downplay their flaws. For example, women with a nice bust line should look into corset tops, and women with a toned back should look into tops that have an open back.

Transform your look with a top for your unique body type

When buying tops body type does matter immensely. Women want to ensure they select the right type of shirt that will flatter their body type. If a woman has a smaller bust, they should wear shirts that have a loose and draped neckline. This will increase volume around the bust area. If a woman has a larger bust line, they should steer clear of excess volume like ruffles and pockets. For women with some additional weight around their midsection, they should not purchase tops that are tight around this area. Slender women, however, can pull off the tight top look. Empire waist shirts flatter all body types. They have a tight band located directly underneath the bosom, the smallest area on the body. It draws attention to that area and not the waist. Tops with a low cut neckline can be quite flattering on most women, but they should beware of exposing too much cleavage. In these situations, it is good to put a tank top or simple camisole on underneath to provide coverage while still showing off the neck. Crew neck shirts and other shirts with higher collars do not flatter all women because it creates the appearance of a much smaller neck. Scoop neck tops and v-neck tops are the best to show off the neck and create the illusion of a much longer silhouette.

For women who want to complement a big bust, they should look for tops that have darts. Horizontal details and double-breasted shirts should be avoided. For small busts, women should look for fitted shirts and empire shirts. If a woman is looking to camouflage their waist and/or their love handles, they should look for tops made of softer fabrics that will not cling to the body. To hide heavy arms, do not buy tops with small sleeves, such as cap sleeves. Quarter-length tops flatter the thinner part of the arm. If a woman has broad shoulders, they should look for deep V-neck shirts that will offset the broadness. Do not purchase tops that have wide collars or necklines or shiny fabrics as it will draw attention. If a woman has narrow shoulders, wide collars and horizontal straps add a bit more to a woman’s stature.

Different types of tops can definitely transform an outfit; for example, make it more casual or dressier. There are many exciting designs and styles from casual to dressy. This can include silk blouses, graphic t-shirts, ruffle tops, plaid button down tops, denim tops, and plain button down shirts. With so many to select from, women can have a lot of fun mixing and matching!
